How Can Daily Meditation Improve Your Quality of Life and Wellbeing?

Meditation has been scientifically tested and proven as being one of the best ways to improve your quality of life, sense of security, and wellbeing. Indeed, meditation can bring peace, mindfulness, gratitude, and an overall sense of happiness and serenity to an otherwise chaotic, stressful, or unsure existence. In fact, even those who are not struggling with the above issues can benefit from meditation; meditation is a grounding exercise for all people at all stages in their life.

What Are the Benefits of Meditation?

Because physical and mental health are so closely related, it is important to look at the benefits of meditation taking a more holistic approach, understanding that what might look like a physical benefit could have a mental health advantage, and visa versa. As published by the Healthline newsletter, some of the biggest benefits of meditation include:

  • Reduced stress;
  • Improved control of anxiety;
  • Enhanced emotional health;
  • More self awareness;
  • Improved and lengthened attention span;
  • Potential improvement in memory (specifically, mitigation of age-related memory loss);
  • Improved sense of control of one’s self;
  • Pain control;
  • Improved sleep; and
  • Decreased blood pressure.

All of the items listed above are ingredients for a happier, healthier, more fulfilling life.

How to Meditate: What Does a Successful Meditation Practice Look Like?

Many people overthink meditation, assuming that is a complex undertaking that is too confusing or time intensive to engage in. In truth, however, meditation can be very simple, and can be as long or as short as you want. In fact, you can benefit by even taking one minute to ground yourself and practice mindfulness through a short meditation.
Some tips for a successful meditation practice include:

  • Practice meditation daily, even if it’s only for a minute or two;
  • As you become more comfortable with meditation, increase the length of your meditation session;
  • Make sure you practice your meditation in a place that is both quiet and comfortable for you;
  • Focus your attention on the act of meditation, including your breathing and the feeling of your body in space;
  • Don’t be judgmental – if your mind starts to wander or you move or otherwise “mess up,” recognize this and gently guide yourself back to the meditation without judgement;
  • Use an app or other form of guidance if you’re just starting out. For example, the New York Times offers a great (and free!) meditation guide you can use.

Remember, you should cultivate a meditation practice that works for you. Don’t worry about obsessing over the small details or meditating exactly the way someone else does.
