If Success Isn’t About Power and Money, What IS It About?

Success is often defined in terms of money, power, and fame, or how much you’ve achieved in your life. Most of us want to experience at least some level of success, but the definition of success varies from person to person.

If you think about what brings you joy, meaning, and satisfaction, that’s a starting place to think about and define success—as success isn’t something that can be dictated to you, because it’s whatever you deem it to be. The problem is that many people haven’t thought much about what makes them successful. It’s an individual concept, but let the following ideas guide you. Success isn’t a destination, it’s a journey, right?

You Are Doing Your Best

You’ve probably read many a quote from great role models and leaders that basically say if you are putting forth your best effort every day, making do with what you have, and meeting your own personal standards, then you are in the process of becoming your best, most successful self. If you feel like you aren’t doing your best, one of the benefits of a thoughtful lifestyle coach is that they can help uncover your true potential.

You Are Doing Something You Love

Do what you love and love what you do. Whether it’s working for someone else or working for yourself, anyone can feel a sense of accomplishment knowing they are choosing a job that makes a difference, no matter how minor it may seem. Completing work goals gives many a sense of accomplishment and pride.

You Love Yourself

Even when we fail, we must still love ourselves. Unconditionally accepting ourselves is one of the hardest things to do, yet the most important undertaking we have as humans. True happiness comes from liking who you are and being able to silence the inner critic at times.

You Are Happy

When you know who you are at your core, it can lead to happiness and inner peace. This doesn’t mean you always have a smile on your face, but perhaps it’s there in your heart. A life of happiness is your choice to make and no one can tell you exactly how to get there.

You Are Giving to Others

You are making a difference in other people’s lives in one way or another. You may help out an elderly neighbor from time to time, make a donation, or volunteer your time to a cause you believe in. In giving back, you share your knowledge and time without strategizing how it can benefit you.

You Have Meaningful Relationships

How you love and how others love you says a lot about the quality of your life. Whether in your career, personal life, or in your community, you make an effort to form meaningful relationships. It starts with having compassion and unconditional love for yourself.

You Are Open to the Process of Self-Discovery

Being open to growth means you’re constantly learning, moving forward, and making adjustments as needed. This may involve taking a self-improvement course or sitting down with yourself and figuring out if you need to set new goals or pursue your passions. Success isn’t a one-and-done deal. It’s a lifelong process of learning.
